Augusta took the #2 spot on a list of the 21 areas of recession-proof metro areas put out by MetroMonitor, a quarterly report released by Brookings Institute’s Metropolitan Policy Program.

The report looks at indicators – such as employment, unemployment, output, home prices, and foreclosure rates – for the nation’s 100 largest metro areas through the first quarter of 2010, which ended in March.

Typically, living near a government center or state capital, which tend to have fewer job cuts and higher spending, pays off and helps the economy. Of the 15 metropolitan areas with the lowest unemployment rates, one is Washington, D.C. and nine are state capitals dominated by government.

Augusta on the other hand, depends more on our Medical and Military communities to keep the economy strong. What else do you believe helps to strengthen the economy in our area?

For a city already internationally known as home to The Masters Golf
Tournament, Augusta is now known for our strong economy in a down
market.

Augusta received these great accolades in 2010:

-Brookings Institution Metro Monitor – 18th among the strongest metro
performances across 4 indicators

Miliken Institute/Greenstreet Real Estate Partners – Augusta is ranked
#82nd Best Performing Cities Index (components include job, wages &
salary and technology growth)

Forbes #5 in the nation “Best Bang For the Buck” Cities

Forbes #22 Fastest Recovering Cities in America

Business Week #23 “Forty Strongest Metro Economies”

Business Week #11 “America’s 25 Next Recovering Job Markets”

Business Week #6 “Strongest Building Markets for Housing”

Business Week #21 “30 Strongest Housing Markets in the United States”

Forbes #44 “100 Cities Where Americans Are Getting Richer”

Relocate America ”Top 100 Cities to Live” 2009

“I have long stated my firm belief that Augusta will become one of the
most thriving mid-sized cities in the Southeast as we move into the 21st
century,” says Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver. “Our region’s strong
economic base and affordable cost of living, coupled with our
internationally known brand name, has placed the Augusta Metropolitan
Area on an upward trajectory which is underscored through these recent
rankings. During difficult economic times, our marketplace still
represents a good investment for businesses and residents alike and
these recognitions show that word of this is definitely beginning to spread.”

For more information, please contact Karyn Nixon, Executive Assistant to
Mayor Copenhaver at 706-821-1833 or email: knixon@augustaga.gov
